In summer, all towns in France are bedecked with flowers in every corner and here is no exception. Avessac, the local village, is just 8km (5ml) away with its boulangeries plus mini-supermarket and bars. Travel just 12 km (8ml) to the west and you come to the town of Redon, a major crossroads between Brittany and the Western Loire. Here the River Vilaine is crossed by the Nantes-Brest Canal

and the popular marina is home to many sailing visitors. On Mondays the market fills the town as well as an indoor fish market and food hall. Try the Breton specialities of galettes and crêpes (savoury and sweet pancakes), a freshly spit-roasted chicken or even paella. Travel further afield by taking the TGV (high-speed train) from Redon to Paris for a quick day trip. In October, the sweet chestnut is celebrated here in style (Fête de Marron).
Also just 12 km (8ml) away but to the east is Guémené Penfao alongside the River Don, smaller but equally charming with its floral displays and little bits of

Redon regatta
The local town Redon, developed as a maritime port primarily for the unloading of wine and salt and reloading of pine tree trunks which were used as pit props in the Welsh mines. Its geographical importance was further emphasised by the opening of the Nantes-Brest Canal in the middle of the 19th Century. Redon became the crossroads for the waterway channels of the West. Most of its architecture dates from the 17th Century, although the present day nave of St-Sauveur Abbey originated in the 11th Century. Present day Redon is the chief town of Brittany's waterways and as such is a favoured tourist stopover. Being at the crossroads of culture has also lead to Redon being renowned for its rich and diverse food.
